30-Day Radical Rest Challenge: Day 29

Today’s Task: Dance with a stranger!

I think I’ve been touched by more people in the last three days than I have in the last three years. And I couldn’t be happier. 🙂

Things you don’t anticipate you’ll ever write. And yet here I am, glowing in the joy of post-dance festival fever.

If you’ve been following along, you’re likely well past Day 30 of our challenge. Congratulations!

For the rest of us, we’re limping along a bit to the end here. Or just taking our own advice, which may mean disengaging for a bit from the digital world.

I gave myself permission to do so last week, and am grateful for the time to step back, and connect with an entirely new community (and some familiar faces) through the act of dance!

Today’s task is to dance with a stranger, and there are a few reasons why:

  1. Whether you are a lead or a follow, dancing requires reciprocity and communication, even if through movement alone. You will necessarily practice the act of receiving which is something that we’ve been working on through this challenge.
  2. Dancing is like improv. You can’t anticipate what’s coming necessarily (more so if you’re a follower) and you have to be present. You can’t be distracted or else things will fall apart. Again, this gets back to one of the things that we’ve been working on through the challenge, which is not to get too far ahead of yourself (in your head or otherwise).
  3. Lastly, by dancing with someone you don’t know, you’re providing an even greater opportunity to learn, get out of your comfort zone, and play. How is this restful, you may be asking? Well, in my opinion, it’s our enslavement to our own rules that often makes us the most anxious, stress, or overwhelmed. Until you break that habit or pattern, you will continue to loop on the same thought patterns. This especially applies to stress. And if you’ve been following along in the challenge until now, you know that the key to manifesting anything you want – including a more nourished, balanced version of yourself – is to master the art of managing your own stress. Dancing will give you an opportunity to take a stab at it.

So go find a stranger. Show up at a bar, open mic night, social dance, or put some music on your phone and invite a passerby on the street to join you.

Hope you have fun, and keep up the great work! We’re almost to the finish line…
